Oslo is the capital of Norway and the most populous city in the country. Oslo was founded in the year 1040 by Harald Hardråde and established as a trading place in 1048. The city was known as Kristiania from 1877 to 1925, at which time its original Norwegian name was restored.
Oslo is the economic and governmental centre of Norway. The city is also a hub of Norwegian trade, banking, industry and shipping. Oslo is considered a global city and ranked "Beta World City" in studies carried out by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group. Oslo occupies an arc of land at the northernmost end of the Oslofjord. The fjord, which is nearly bisected by the Nesodden peninsula opposite Oslo, lies to the south; in all other directions Oslo is surrounded by green hills and mountains, there are also 40 islands close bythe city.
Because of the city's northern latitude, daylight varies greatly, from more than 18 hours in midsummer, when it never gets completely dark at nigh, to around 6 hours in midwinter. Oslo features a temperate humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb), but with mild winters for this climate zone. Average temperature in january is 1°C (31 °F), and in july the average temperature is 17°C (64 °F).
