Bergen is a city on the west coast of Norway, the metropolitan region of Bergen has about 420,000 residents. Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway, and is on the peninsula of Bergenshalvøyen. The peninsula extends out from the mainland, and it is surrounded by the several fjords.
The city is an international centre for aquaculture, shipping, offshore petroleum industry and subsea technology, and a national centre for higher education, media, tourism and finance. Bergen Port is Norway's busiest harbor in both freight and passengers, with over 300 cruise ship calls a year bringing nearly a half a million passengers to Bergen. The city is also known as the city of seven mountains.
Bergen is well known for having a mild winter climate, though with a lot of precipitation. The Gulf Stream keeps the sea warm, considering the latitude, and the mountains protect the city from cold winds from the north. Average temperature in january is 2°C (36 °F), and in july the average temperature is 16°C (62 °F). The high precipitation (avg. 2400 mm/year) is often used in the marketing of the city.
